What is dustless (DCS) sanding?

How does DCS sanding work?
Our sanding machines are fitted with an on board separator and HEPA filter 75% of the clean air vents from the HEPA filter. The remaining 25% of air and all of the wood waste is transported to the containment drum. The remaining air is transferred through another HEPA filter. The Teflon-like coated HEPA filters capture 99.97% of material down to 0.3 microns. Air tests show over 100 times cleaner than cloth bags.
How does traditional "cloth bag" sanding work?
The dust from sanding operations is blown into a cloth bag. When the bag fills up with wood waste, air flow from the sander drops off because there is nowhere for the air to go. The fine dust blows through the woven bag. The operator has to periodically stop and empty the bag. The end result is a dusty job.
Our Observations
At first we were skeptical about "dust free sanding" with DCS equipment. We didn't believe a wood floor could be sanded with virtually no dust. For decades Masterpiece used traditional cloth bags on all of our machines. During the sanding process we had to use protective masks. The dust was so thick a person could hardly see across a room while we were sanding. This same dust would cover the walls 4 feet high. We would hang plastic and vaccum the baseboards, window sills, and doors. The dust would still infiltrate the entire house.
We are not easily impressed, but we were believers after the first job. The crew didn't need to use protective masks, no plastic was hung, and the air was clear while sanding. There was virtuallly no dust left behind. We believed in the system so much we immediately bought two more. The investment was well worth it. The jobs we complete are smoother and cleaner. Our jobs are healthier for our client's and employee's.
The Federal government has added wood dust to its list of known human carcinogens and surprisingly, old wood varnishes can contain as much lead as old paint.
